报告题目:Preparation of Advanced Electrode Materials for Zinc-Based Batteries

Benefitting from inherent safety, excellent gravimetric and volumetric energy performance, abundant environmentally friendly raw materials, and low cost, aqueous zinc-based batteries have attracted increased attention as a compelling alternative energy storage technology to Liion batteries. In this presentation, I will present our recent research activities on advanced electrocatalytic materials development for next-generation Zn-air batteries, as well as the state of-the-art cathode materials for zinc-metal batteries. More specifically, I will discuss the tailoring of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as high-performance and durable bifunctional oxygen evolution/reduction reaction (OER/ORR) electrocatalysts. To develop a deep understanding of the origin of the excellent electrocatalytic OER/ORR activities of the synthesized MOFs, their electronic configurations, and the adsorption energy of H2O and other intermediate species on the catalytically active sites, the results of DFT calculations will be explained. A tri-metal borate catalyst, prepared from a Ni, Co, and Fe-based layered double hydroxide (LDH) as a starting material via a facile electrosynthesis approach will also be discussed.
In addition to the development of advanced Zn-air batteries’ electrocatalysts, the development of advanced cathode materials for zinc-metal batteries will also be talked about. Particularly, the electrochemical pulse-drive regenerative mechanism, adapted in this study for extending the cycling stability of the Zn-metal batteries beyond 17,000 cycles will be explained. We hope these intriguing approaches will inspire further developments towards fabricating advanced aqueous batteries for an energy-secure future.
